A feeling that seemed to exist somewhere between your thoughts and your body, without a clear story attached to it?

Perhaps a piece of music brought tears to your eyes without an obvious reason. Perhaps a familiar melody transported you to another time in your life. Or perhaps you have felt a sense of calm simply by listening to the sound of rain.

These experiences remind us that we don’t relate to the world through thought and language alone. Sound speaks to more than our ears

We often think of hearing as a passive process. Sounds enter our ears, our brains interpret them, and we recognise what we are listening to.

But auditory perception is much more complex.

When we listen to music, for example, the brain engages networks involved in memory, emotion, attention, movement and reward. A melody can evoke a memory, a rhythm can influence our movement, and a particular combination of sounds can create an emotional response before we consciously understand why.

Research into music and the brain, including a comprehensive review by Vuust and colleagues published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience in 2022, demonstrates how music engages multiple interconnected neural systems.

This helps explain why sound can affect us in ways that are not always easy to articulate.

We do not necessarily need to know why a sound makes us feel something. We experience the response first, and sometimes understanding comes afterwards.

Sound therefore offers an interesting way of engaging with human experience that is not exclusively dependent on conscious analysis or verbal expression.

2.The body has its own language

Our emotions are not just thoughts. They are also physical experiences.

Think about what happens when you feel stressed. Your breathing may become shallow, your jaw may tighten, your shoulders may rise and your stomach may feel unsettled. You might recognise these sensations before you have even identified what is making you anxious.

This is because psychological and physiological processes are closely interconnected.

A useful concept here is interoception, our ability to perceive and interpret signals coming from within the body. These include sensations related to breathing, heartbeat, temperature and internal bodily states.

Interoception contributes to how we recognise and understand our emotions. For example, noticing a change in our breathing or a tightening in our chest can influence how we interpret what we are feeling.

This is particularly relevant to sound because sound is not exclusively an auditory experience.

Sound is vibration travelling through a medium. When we listen to instruments such as singing bowls or gongs, we encounter complex tones, resonance and vibrations. Depending on the instrument and our proximity to it, we may experience these through hearing as well as physical sensation.

3. Experiencing rather than analysing

One of the interesting differences between verbal and sensory experiences is the way we engage with them.

When we talk about something, we naturally organise it into language. We describe what happened, explain how we felt and try to make sense of our experience.

This process can be incredibly valuable. Psychological therapies use language to help people understand their experiences, recognise patterns and develop new ways of relating to themselves.

However, not every aspect of human experience is immediately accessible through language.

Sometimes we struggle to identify an emotion. Sometimes we understand something intellectually but find it difficult to connect with it emotionally. And sometimes we simply need an opportunity to experience something without having to explain it.

Sound offers a different kind of engagement.

During a sound meditation, for example, there is no need to follow a conversation, construct an explanation or reach a particular conclusion. Attention can rest on the sounds themselves: their texture, rhythm, intensity, resonance and gradual disappearance.

This may create space for noticing internal experiences without immediately trying to interpret them.

Research on music and emotional processing supports the idea that auditory experiences can evoke emotions and memories without requiring verbal processing. Music can communicate emotional qualities through melody, rhythm and harmony, even when there are no lyrics.

This does not mean that sound bypasses the brain or accesses an otherwise inaccessible part of the mind. Rather, it engages different aspects of our perception and emotional experience.

And perhaps that is precisely what makes it interesting.

We are not always required to understand an experience while it is happening. Sometimes simply allowing ourselves to experience it can be valuable in its own right.

4. Can sound influence the way we feel and respond?

The question of whether sound can contribute to psychological change is increasingly attracting scientific interest.

Research on music therapy has demonstrated potential benefits for anxiety and emotional well-being.

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis involving 51 studies and 3,276 participants found a moderate reduction in self-reported anxiety following music therapy interventions. Interestingly, the effects were less conclusive when researchers examined physiological measurements.

This suggests that auditory interventions can influence how people experience their emotional state, although the relationship between subjective feelings and bodily responses is not always straightforward.

There is also emerging research specifically on singing bowls.

In a randomized controlled trial published in 2023, researchers investigated the effects of Tibetan singing bowl sounds on 50 adults experiencing high levels of anxiety. Participants who received the intervention reported reduced anxiety, and researchers also observed changes in heart rate variability.

Another study by Goldsby and colleagues (2017) found that participants reported reduced tension, anger, fatigue and depressed mood following a singing bowl meditation session.

A systematic review by Lin and colleagues (2025), examining 14 quantitative studies, also reported generally encouraging findings concerning psychological well-being and physiological responses.

These findings are interesting because they suggest that sound based experiences may influence more than our immediate perception of relaxation.

5. A different pathway, not a replacement for therapy

It is tempting to compare sound therapy with talking therapy and ask which one works more deeply.

But perhaps this is not the most useful question.

Psychological therapy and sound based practices offer different experiences and can serve different purposes.

Through conversation, we can explore our personal history, understand recurring patterns, challenge beliefs and develop new ways of responding to life’s difficulties.

Through sound, we can engage with listening, sensation, attention and emotional experience in a less verbally structured environment.

Neither approach is inherently deeper or more powerful than the other.

In fact, they may complement each other.

Consider someone who experiences persistent stress. Talking about the sources of that stress may help them understand what is happening in their life. A sound session, meanwhile, may offer an opportunity to pause, direct attention towards bodily sensations and experience a period of focused listening and rest.

The two experiences are different, but both may contribute to a broader process of self-awareness and well-being.

For this reason, sound therapy is best approached as a complementary practice rather than an alternative to appropriate psychological or medical care.

Its value does not depend on replacing other therapeutic approaches, but on offering another way to engage with the complexity of human experience.

6. Making space for an experience we cannot always explain

We live in a world that constantly asks us to think, respond, interpret and make sense of things. Even when we take time for ourselves, we often approach relaxation with an objective: to calm down, improve our mood or get rid of unwanted thoughts.

Sound offers an opportunity to approach the moment differently.

In a sound session, we are invited to listen. To notice how sounds emerge, overlap, resonate and gradually fade. We can observe what happens within us without needing to make anything happen.

For some people, this might feel deeply relaxing. For others, it might evoke memories, emotions or physical sensations. Some may simply enjoy the experience of being still and listening.

There is no correct response, and not every experience needs to carry a particular meaning.

Perhaps the most valuable part is the opportunity to step away from constant thinking and become more attentive to what is happening in the present moment.

Conclusion: What sound makes possible

Perhaps the most interesting thing about sound is not simply that it can relax us, but that it can engage several dimensions of human experience simultaneously.

A sound is perceived by the auditory system, interpreted by the brain, associated with memories and emotions, and sometimes experienced through physical vibration. It can capture attention, evoke imagery, influence our sense of time and movement, and create an experience that unfolds without requiring us to translate everything into language.
This gives sound a range of possibilities that extend beyond relaxation.

It can become a medium for emotional expression, a focus for attention, a sensory experience that encourages bodily awareness, a source of pleasure and connection, or an opportunity to experience something outside our usual patterns of thinking.

For me, this is where the therapeutic potential of sound becomes particularly interesting.
Not as a replacement for psychological work, but as another way of engaging with the complexity of being human.

We often approach change by trying to understand what is happening and finding ways to respond differently. Sound introduces another dimension: the possibility of experiencing something different first, and allowing that experience to become a starting point for curiosity, awareness and further exploration.

The question is not whether sound can replace words.
